Archetypes In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight - 829 Words

Archetypes can be found in most literary work, especially in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight most characters or objects served to aid in the development of the hero by being either a situational, character, color, or a symbol archetype. The poem begins with a challenge being presented to the knights of the Round Table by the Green Knight. While seeing that no one else will accept the challenge, putting Camelot’s honor at stake, Gawain accepts and then realizes that in a year they must meet again and the Green Knight will return the blow that Gawain gave to him. On the third day that Gawain is staying with the Host he is given a green girdle by the Host’s wife that is said to protect the person wearing it; knowing that he will meet with the Green Knight the next day, he selfishly keeps the girdle without telling the Host. The next day Gawain meets with the Green Knight to complete the challenge that was presented to him in the beginning of the poem. However, since the Green Knight knows that Gawain broke the deal with the Host he cuts Gawain on the third swing of his sword. The three swings symbolize the three days Gawain stayed at the castle. The first two swings dont touch him because he kept his part of the deal. On the third swing he is cut, this symbolizes the third day when he keeps the girdle and breaks his part of the deal. The author utilizes colors to aid in the development of Gawain’s character: â€Å"Then they brought him his shield, which was of bright red, †¦ gleaming gold† (Weston 12). The red that Gawain wears symbolizes the passion that he shows toward the deal he made with the Green Knight. The gold symbolizes values and nobility two things that Gawain holds to a high standard. Leadership and Management at Meatpack

Derek Bison is the founder and CEO of MeatPack, which is a food-processing business in Australia. MeatPack is a family-owned business and Derek Bison belongs to the fourth generation of his family. Bison is an ambitious person, who is actively involved in the development of leadership competencies of strategy team. Bison is very competitive and obsessive about the business and has been thriving energetically to bring out positive change in the culture of the company. Bison has made huge investment in the training and development of the employees, which has also yielded results by pushing the executive level employees towards the managerial level. The employees have also gained from the activity and have enhanced their overall skills and abilities. This hands-off approach is also called Laissez-faire or delegative leadership style (Pride, Hughes and Kapoor, 2009). In a delegative leadership style, leaders give the members liberty to make their own decisions without receiving any gu idance from the top leaders (Northouse, 2014). The leaders are only responsible for facilitating the resources and equipments which are required in the process and the team members have to resolve their problems on their own. The followers have the complete authority to take decisions and are accounted for the consequences. In the present scenario, Bison also adopted the same approach wherein, he facilitated the training program for the employees without intriguing in the process. He has already made huge investment for conducting the training programs for employees. Delegative leadership style has been proved to be ineffective in the company and has been found to yield the lowest productivity among the team members and has also led to the investment of money, time, manpower and other resources of the company (Chaudhry and Javed, 2012). On the other hand, hands-on approach is facilitates effective management wherein, leaders have complete involvement into the day to day operational activities and always strive to bring best from their employees. In this kind of management approach, leaders drive the workforce towards common goal and mission which yield better results by increasing the productivity of the team members. Since, Bison has already experimented with the hand-off approach and it might have been proved to be successful for short term duration, but would not support the growth of the organization for longer duration (Gavriletea and Wague, 2014). Thus, in order to maintain the sustainability of the company, Bison needs to adopt a hands-on approach which would help him to understand the company and industry trends in a better way. Hands-on approach would develop trust and enthusiasm among the team members through continuous feedback process and engagement of the employees. This approach would lead to the development of new plans and approaches at the senior management level. After developing the layout of the plan, manager would need to give their efforts and time to implement the activities laid out in the plan. Further, the approach would also build credibility of Bison among his team members because of his involvement in the decision making process and his concern with the final product of the company. In a hands-on approach, a company works in collaborative fashion demonstrating teamwork, which is directed towards common vision. Thus, hands-on approach would help Bison to maintain his reputation among the senior strategy team members through the following ways: Regain trust and re-build relationship: Bison needs re-establish his position in the firm to gain trust among the senior strategy members. He needs to take active participation in the business decision instead of just dumping the responsibilities on the training companies (Newman and Ober, 2016). Sharing the Views and Opinions: Employees are always keen to know the thinking pattern of their leaders. Though Bison has been very active in his management approach, but he could still adopt more hands-on approach and influence the culture of the organization through his values and beliefs instead of facilitating the training courses for the employees. Reconnecting with the Business: Instead of investing his time on facilitating training programs for the employees, he should engage himself more with the employees and clients to create bond with them (Llopis, 2012). Bison has got involved in the office politics which has distracted him from the companys goals and objectives. He needs to understand that in order to maintain his reputation and position, he has to align himself with the companys goals and objectives. Innovation and Creativity: Innovation and creativity has become an integral ingredient for the sustenance of a company. Bison needs to look for opportunities to explore his creativity and extend his power and authority in the company. The leader of a company plays a very significant role in maintaining the sustainability in the changing global business context. Drive Focus: Focus is the key ingredient for any successful organization (Gilbert, 2007). The employees have become distracted because of so many ongoing activities within the company. Bison needs to take control of his authority to drive focus within the environment of the company. 2. Bison has adopted a hands-off approach in the process of senior leadership management by facilitating the training program for the team. Bison prefers a hands-on approach of intervening, but has struggled with himself to stay away from the team to incorporate hands-off approach. Bison has also realized the scope for improvement with the organizational cultural values for the growth of the company. He has also assessed the need for a more horizontal culture which would empower the employees with authority and accountability. The employees have become more open and can now raise their queries and concern with the Bison. In spite of Bisons consistent efforts, the company has lost some of its influential leaders, which has incurred huge losses for the company. This has triggered the need for structural change within the company and the senior strategy team looks forward to remove the Bison from the CEO position to hand over the responsibility to COO of the company. This has shocked Bi son and shattered his aspiration to move from CEO to executive chairman in the next ten years. The decision of senior strategy team is correct from their behalf as they are concerned about the growth of the company and have strategically devised this decision as a plan to succeed. The decision would demoralize Bison by depriving him of his current position and handing the responsibility to the COO of the company. Bison has made consistent efforts to contribute towards the growth of the company. He has taken initiative to bring about cultural changes in the organization so that people become more flexible and open to new ideas. Though Bisons efforts did not bring the desired results, yet it did enhance the skills and abilities of the employees through extensive training program and the employees have become more focused towards the companys goals and objectives. Looking at the situation from another perspective, Bison has wasted companys resources for nothing. He has invested ample amount of money, manpower, time and other resources of the company without giving any results. MeatPack has to achieve the target of 1 billion dollar by the year 2020 which seems difficult under the leadership of Bison. Apart from this, many influential senior leaders have left the company under the leadership of Bison because of their conflicting personalities. The company has lost some its clients under the leadership of Bison. There is a dilemma in the situation and the CFO is unable to understand whether, the board of directors should hold the senior strategy team more responsible or the CEO. The senior leadership changes have created a chaos within the company and all the leaders are having arguments regarding who would be the CEO. The structural changes have created a very complicated situation which would cost time and money to the company. Asking a CEO to step down from his position is a very huge step for a company and needs to be taken very wisely. From the case study, this can be analyzed that there was a need to bring the change within the companys senior management structure. The structural changes would bring the following changes in the company: Efficiency and Productivity: A companys structure is responsible for the productivity of the operational processes (Andersson and Zbirenko, 2014). Senior management plays significant role in affecting the communication strategy of the company and communication affects the pace at which activities work within the organization. Changing the structure of the senior management would affect the communication strategy of MeatPack, which would affect the efficiency and overall productivity of the company. The employees would have to go through several changes because of the new structure. The employees would now be more efficient which would increase their overall productivity. Innovation: A companys structure has great affect on the idea generation and its implementation within the company (Agbim, 2013). New ideas lead to innovation which is the key ingredient for the sustainability of the company. MeatPackss structural changes in the senior management may also encourage the employees to come up with new ideas. Though there are chances that the structural changes may have positive impact on the organizational culture of the company, there are greater chances of hampering the organizational culture of the company. Changes in senior management questions the credibility of the company and employees begun to think that the senior management is unable to manage the companys operations effectively. The employees would become insecure in terms of their own positions in the company after realizing that the CEO of the company has been asked to step down. This would bring down the morale of the employees which would affect the overall productivity of the company. Recommendations: Teamwork through effective communication In future, the company needs to adopt more holistic approach to implement change effectively in the organization. CEO and the team must work collaboratively to bring out the effective changes within the company instead of misbalancing the effectiveness of the organization. The senior leaders should rather focus on extending teamwork through effective communication in the workplace. Their focus should be creating positive environment within the company which is necessary for the birth of innovative ideas (Hao and Yazdanifard, 2015). Thus, the focus of the team should be on improving the productivity of employees which could be achieved through different ways. Lead with Culture: In order to implement any change within an organization, leaders must lead with the culture. According to the Katzenbach survey, 84 percent of the people considered change as a critical tool to bring change management within an organization. The senior management of MeatPack must also consider this in mind while taking future decisions. Beginning from the Top: The next thing that the senior management needs to consider while taking a decision is that it must first discuss the change within the top management first and then bring it down to the lower level (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Bien and Hunt, 2011). Involving every layer: Senior management must try to include every layer of the organization to ensure that the change is being implemented in the correct fashion. Make the rational and emotional case together: The new change must blend with the values and beliefs of the people so that they also feel that they are also a part of it (Nelson and Quick, 2013). Creative and Innovative: The change must ensure that it brings out the creativity and innovation within the company. The change must foster innovative ideas by encouraging employees to participate in the meetings and discussion and share their views and opinions. Innovation is the key ingredient to establish sustainability on the organization. Engagement: Any new change implementation requires strong communication to communicate it to the employees (McCalman, Paton and Siebert, 2015). MeatPack must ensure that it thrives towards long term change through strategic planning. Leading outside the lines: In order to bring effective change, an organization need to lead outside the side lines (Reiss, 2012). MeatPack should identify the people who are great motivators and have stayed with the company for a long period of time to include them in the discussion. These kind of people are pride builders, trusted nodes and culture ambassadors. Leveraging formal solution: Last but not the least, the company must also adopt leveraging solution to bring effective change (Finch, 2011). 3. Meatpack has consistently focused on improving its organization culture and introduction of ERP was one such thing. The companys flatter structure has supported to improve the companys cultural values by empowering the employees to take more responsibility and accountability. This has resulted in increased productivity of the employees. Further, the extensive training programs conducted by Bison have also given an opportunity to the employees to enhance their skills and abilities. The employees have also appreciated the training program and have gained new insights from it. Further, employee empowerment has also given room for discussion of the problems and working on the solution. The managers not just manage their teams rather lead their teams. Thus, the overall development has led to firmly establish trust among the employees and created very healthy environment within the company. MeatPacks flatter culture has helped to establish strong communication within the organization and employees can easily share their problems with their managers or leaders, which has helped to maintain healthy environment. New changes are implemented quickly within the company such as ERP implementation was quickly enabled by Bison. Bison has encouraged the managers to lead instead of just managing. Further, the company has also been able to retain its employee in an industry where employees find it difficult to stay committed to a company. The company also does not face any cross-cultural clashes in spite of having diverse workforce. The employees have also gained from the growth opportunities provided by the company and the employee who joined as an accountant has become CFO of the company. Thus, the flatter structure of the organization has been very supportive for implementing the cultural changes in the company because of strong communication within the company. The mutual trust among the employees helps to implement the changes quickly because they are of the view that any change would be introduced with the best intention and would be in the favor of the employees. Bison has always acted with the best intention for the company but has overlooked the fact that conducting training programs becomes a costly affair for the company. MeatPacks flatter structure has acted as an obstacle in the growth and development of the company (Giang, 2015). The 2004 Computer Security Institute/Federal Bureau of Investigation (CSI/FBI) ran a study found that 79 percent of the organizations responding (Primarily large corporations and government agencies) identified cyber security breaches within with the last 12 months, a number that is on the decline. The study also found that 54 percent of these organizations reported financial losses totaling over $141 million, due to computer security breaches. The number of respondents identifying unauthorized computer use was 53 percent, down from 56 percent in 2003. Some threats to be concerned with is accidents, employee mistake s, piracy, copyright infringement, unauthorized access and/ or data collection, blackmail or information disclosure, destruction of systems or information, illegal confiscation of equipment or information, viruses, worms, macros, denial of service, forces of nature, ISP, power, or WAN service issues from service providers, equipment failure, bugs, code problems, unknown loopholes, antiquated or outdated technologies. Network security isn’t the only important type of security for corporation; information security is also a very important factor. Quality security programs begin and end with policy. Information security is often a management problem, not a technical one, policy obliges personnel to function in a manner that adds to the security of information assets, rather than as a threat to those assets. It is interesting to note that security policies are the least expensive control to execute, but the most difficult to implement properly. They are the lowest cost in that they involve only the time and effort of the management team to create, approve, and communicate. Their recent partnership to be the pizza sponsor of the Superbowl over the past three years is a correct way. This allows people to get a cheap premium pizza and try and understand its superiority. There are a few key issues that Papa Johns should expand on, especially in the next five years. Papa Johns, in terms of its menu, is drastically behind its competitors. Dominos and Pizza Hut both offer more alternative options in terms of just having pizza. If Papa Johns differentiated its product and included the same items that the competitors provide, such as sandwiches and salad options, their focus could be spread to more people that are not currently within their market share. Papa Johns was created by a company combining with a pizza company, so another acquisition of another type of food industry could drastically change Papa Johns for the better. Another key issue that none of the big three pizza companies are doing is touching the international market. All of them have stores, but they often are just moving their culture to other countries. Jack London's To Build a Fire In his short story entitled "To Build a Fire," Jack London portrays a bitter conflict between man and nature. The nature in this story is the harsh environment of the Yukon Trail. London chose to use nature as the antagonist, almost as a force working against the main character in his struggle for survival. London accomplished this personification of nature by giving the environment many human characteristics, by creating numerous things going wrong that really should not have happened, and by foreshadowing the protagonist's fate all throughout the story. The author used such a struggle with man versus nature in many of his stories. He liked to portray a sort of struggle for survival, a rising up against the odds, theme to appeal to the masses at the time. Bacevich, “Appetite for Destruction”

Bacevich argues that â€Å"life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,† principles on which the American government were based, has always been associated with the desire to accumulate: territories, business markets, and precious resources. In the present day, for many Americans, this ideology equates with consumerism, and the consumerist/materialist/self-indulgent culture affects foreign policy. In the American conscience, expansion, abundance, and freedom have been inextricably linked.This linkage is most evident in the events and American’s economic and military status directly following World War II. The post-World War II expansion, however, reached a crisis point in the 60s with the Vietnam War, when America was transformed into an â€Å"Empire of Consumption. † Now, these three concepts are not related reciprocally: expansion is not leading to abundance. On the contrary, it is leading to scarcity. Bacevich argues that U. S.’s reliance on oil and pet roleum (and its dependence on foreign sources for this resource) has led it to stray from ethical foreign policy. This phenomenon was something that Carter recognized, but the American public was unwilling to admit that their primary threat was their own consumerist behavior (and not some outside threat). Reagan indulged the American public’s desire for instant gratification: oil consumption jumped considerably as did the size of the national debt, and savings dwindled as American’s borrowed more and more. The dependency on oil has made the U.S. dependent on Islamic lands, and Presidents have generally relied on military power to retain access to these necessary resources. In the aftermath of September 11, President Bush encouraged Americans to indulge their consumerism. Instead of advising them that saving might be prudent given that war costs money, Bush focused on preserving the American way of life. Because the American way of life has not been seen as a major prob lem, Americans now have expensive commitments in foreign lands and face dangers that they are poorly equipped to face.

How to Create a Perfect Bright Futures Application SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The Florida Bright Futures scholarships are great funding options for Florida residents who want to stay in the state for college or vocational school. All three awards are easily renewable, which means you could significantly cut your college expenses for several years. You might think there’s some complicated paperwork involved in submitting the Florida Bright Futures scholarship application. As it turns out, much of the process is streamlined and automated - you actually don’t have to jump through too many hoops to apply. The eligibility requirements are a bit of a different story, but once you meet those, the application process should be pretty easy. In this post, I'll briefly explain about eligibility requirements before moving on to the application timeline. I'll end with tips and strategies you can use to submit the best possible Bright Futures application. Bright Futures Requirements for Eligibility The first step in submitting a successful Bright Futures scholarship application is to make sure you’re actually eligible for the scholarship. This isn’t something you can do at the last minute- meeting eligibility requirements for these awards requires more long-term thinking. General Scholarship Requirements Here are the general requirements that apply to all Bright Futures Scholarships: You must be a Florida resident and US citizen or eligible non-citizen(this is determined by your college). Youmust complete the Florida Financial Aid Application by 8/31 of the year of your high school graduation. Youmust earn a standard Florida high school diploma or its equivalent from a Florida public high school or a registered Florida Department of Education private school. Youcan’t have been convicted of (or pleaded no contest to) a felony charge. You must be accepted by and enroll in a degree or certificate program at an eligible Florida public or independent postsecondary institution (postsecondary = college, vocational, or professional program). You must be enrolled for at least 6 (non-remedial) credit hours per term. Specific Scholarship Requirements There are different minimum GPA, ACT/SAT, and service hour requirements for the three Bright Futures scholarships. The most competitive scholarship is the Florida Academic Scholars Program (FAS), followed by the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS), and then the Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV). Note that these requirements are only valid for students graduating high school through 2020. Florida legislature recently passed a bill that will raise the SAT minimums for students graduating in 2021 and beyond. This chart outlines some of the most important requirements for the FAS and FMS programs (you don't need to take both the ACT and SAT- one will do!). To get more detailed information on meeting all of these requirements, check out our Bright Futures guide. 4 Steps to Applying for a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Much of this process is automated- you won’t have to do much extra work outside of submitting the Florida Financial Aid Application and keeping an eye on your app to make sure everything is processed correctly. If all of your eligibility requirements check out, you can start the application as early as December 1. Step 1: Submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) The FFAAopens December 1 each year. YourFlorida Bright Futures account login information will be sent to you after you submit the FFAA. Just remember that you must submit your FFAA by August 31 of the year that you graduate from high school, or you won't be eligible for a scholarship award. Step 2: Take the ACT or SAT and Submit Your Scores The good news is that you’ll have to take either the ACT or SAT for college applications anyway. Send your scores to any Florida public college or university to ensure that the Florida Department of Education- the institution that reviews Bright Futures applications- receives them. Step 3: Submit Your Official High School Transcripts More good news:many schools will submit your transcripts automatically for consideration. Still, it's a good idea to check in with your guidance counselor about whether you need to take any additional steps. Step 4: Keep the Information in Your Account Updated There are a bunch of things you can (and should) manageonce you get your Bright Futures account information: Monitor your reported service hours. Update your postsecondary institution: once you’ve been accepted to/enrolled at a FL college or vocational school, you would make a note of this in your account. Update any demographic information. View your eligibility determination: check your account once everything’s been submitted to see if you’re eligible for the scholarship. Application Timelines There are two Bright Futures timelines to be aware of if you're ready to start the application process: Early Evaluation and Final Evaluation. If you can plan for the Early Evaluation timeline, you could potentially learn about Bright Futures eligibility as early as March. Early Evaluation If your transcripts are submitted for early evaluation (based on academic progress in the middle of the last year of high school and test scores for tests taken by January 31), you’ll get an eligibility notification posted to your online account. These postingsmay begin in March, according to the Florida Department of Education. Final Evaluation All students whose final transcripts are submitted following the last high school term will get an eligibility notification posted to their online account. These postings may beginin July, again according to the Florida Department of Education. How to Make Your Application Stand Out Now that you know a little bit more about eligibility requirements and the application process, you can focus on making your Bright Futures application the best it can be. The good news: aside from making sure you meet all eligibility requirements, there isn’t much you have to do to make your application â€Å"stand out.† If you meet the requirements for the FAS, FMS, or GSV scholarship, you’ll receive the scholarship- it’s as simple as that. The bad news: the eligibility requirements are strict. There’s no grayarea- you either qualify because you meet all requirements, or you don’t (no matter how close you are) and don’t get a scholarship. There are some eligibility loopholes and exceptions for out-of-state, homeschooled, and GED students- learn more about them in our requirements guide. The best Bright Futures success strategy will focus onmeeting eligibility requirements as early in your high school career as possible. The following tips will help you do that, starting right now. Coursework All Bright Futures scholarships require students to complete a certain set of high school courses. You’re likely to meet all coursework requirements if you went to high school in Florida. If you suspect there may be a problem, schedule ameeting with your guidance counselor. GPA It's difficult to significantly raise your GPA in a short period of time. Focus on your grades by picking a realistic GPA minimum starting your freshman year. If you're struggling to meet your goal, here are some ways to bring up that GPA: Take classes that are appropriate for your skill level. If you're unsure about which classes are most appropriate, meet with your guidance counselor to discuss. See teachers for extra help in weak subject areas. Community Service The earlier you start reporting your community service hours, the fewer hours per week you’ll need to volunteer. If you start chipping away at this requirement as a senior, you'll have to set aside 2-3 hours a week for community service; if you start as a freshman; however, you'll only need to volunteer 1-1.5 hours every two weeks. You can't earn any money for your community service hours, but you can kill two birds with one stone and look for positions where you can get interesting professional experience. Start by asking friends and family for suggestions- make sure you're working with a legitimate agency who will reliably track your hours. Finally, set a schedule. Go at the same time every week or every two weeks so you don't fall behind on completing your hours.
